How the car comparison scores work
Seven criteria produce the score. Federal datasets retain 70% of the weight; documented editorial review covers the parts of ownership that crash tests and complaint databases cannot measure.
The weighting
NHTSA complaints normalized by EWR production volume.
The latest published overall crash-test result for the generation.
EPA annual energy cost against the same vehicle class and powertrain family.
Steering, cornering control, stability and maneuverability from manually reviewed owner discussions.
Documented editorial review of ride, seats, noise and climate comfort.
Passenger space, cargo usefulness, storage and access.
Feature currency, stability, usability and connectivity.
When NCAP has not rated a vehicle
No safety score is guessed. The individual vehicle score is marked provisional and calculated from the available 75% of evidence. In a head-to-head comparison, NCAP is removed from both vehicles so each side uses the same criteria and effective weights.
How handling is reviewed
An editor reads a generation-matched Reddit owner discussion and records a short synthesis rather than scraping posts or averaging upvotes. Steering feel and cornering control carry 30% each, stability confidence 25%, and maneuverability 15%. The result is an editorial assessment, not an owner-satisfaction survey.
What stays outside the score
Recall completion remains descriptive because a completion rate covers an entire campaign, not one model generation. Complaint narratives explain the reliability result but are not scored a second time. A lead below 0.3 point is treated as a tie.
